Embodiment 1

[0054] The foaming properties of the base formulation were tested using systematic variants of different ingredients to determine the effect of different ingredients on foam density and volume.

[0055]Foam volume and foam density were measured using a SITA Foam Tester R-2000 available from SITA Messtechnik GmbH. Foam was generated from a slurry sample of toothpaste and water in a ratio of 1:4 under controlled conditions using controlled amounts of materials. The foam volume is the amount of foam observed by the sample 30 seconds after initiation of foam generation (ie, after the stir bar begins to move). Foam density is the mass of liquid converted to foam divided by the volume of liquid converted to foam.

Embodiment 2

[0057] Table 1 (below) describes the formulation of an exemplary composition of the present invention (Composition A) and a commercially available toothpaste (Comparative Example I). Both laboratory and sensory test results demonstrate that Composition A exhibits higher foam volume and foam density relative to a commercially available toothpaste with a similar formulation.

Embodiment 3

[0062] Three scents of the prototype product and an industrial benchmark product were tested in a consumer home use test involving approximately 150 respondents (age 18-45 years, 70% female, 30% male), pre-screened for medical or dental problems or Industry alliances that could skew results. Consumers used each product for three days, answered questionnaires, and analyzed the data.

[0063] Most consumers find that in prototypes that are significantly higher than existing commercial formulations, the amount and consistency of foam is roughly correct, although a small amount feels too much.

Abstract

Described herein are oral care compositions comprising a surfactant system; a structuring agent, and a lipophilic agent; and methods of making and using the same.

Description

[0001] This application is a divisional application of an invention patent with an application date of October 5, 2011, an application number of 201180066836.6, and an invention title of "oral care composition". [0002] Background of the invention [0003] Dentifrice fragrance, along with other sensory attributes, are major factors for consumers to choose a brand. Fragrance is a strong signal of freshness perception and is rated by consumers, but conventional dentifrice formulations may serve to diminish rather than enhance fragrance. Taste is also important and toothpaste must be formulated to avoid soapy or gritty or astringent tastes. Formulating a dentifrice with optimal sensory properties is difficult and requires trial and error, while maintaining the functional properties of the dentifrice to clean teeth and deliver benefit agents such as fluoride, whiteners and / or antimicrobials. Despite the many dentifrice products on the market, there is still a need for products wi...
