example 1

[0066] This example was performed to demonstrate the fabrication and properties of the disclosed multilayer articles. Table 1, Table 2 and Table 3 indicate the nomenclature used and show the composition of some of the ingredients detailed below.

[0067] Table 1

[0068]

[0069] From Table 1 it can be seen that any sample with CA in its descriptor contains thermoplastic starch obtained from CARDIA. Samples with "Ca" in their descriptor contained calcium carbonate, while samples with KS, KS 2, and KS3 in their descriptor contained thermoplastic starch manufactured by the Dow Chemical Company. A layer with CACa in its descriptor thus has CARDIA thermoplastic starch and calcium carbonate in it, while a layer with KSCa in its descriptor has Dow's thermoplastic starch and calcium carbonate in it. The composition of the starch samples manufactured by CARDIA (CA) and the starch samples manufactured by Dow Chemical Company (KS, KS 2 and KS 3) are detailed in Table 2 below. Addi...

Abstract

Disclosed herein is a multilayered article comprising a first layer comprising a thermoplastic polymer; wherein the thermoplastic polymer comprises polyolefin, a compatibilizer and thermoplastic starch; wherein the first layer does not contain any filler; and a second layer comprising a polyolefin and a filler; wherein the second layer does not contain any thermoplastic starch. Disclosed herein too is a method of manufacturing the multilayered article comprising coextruding a first layer and a second layer; wherein the first layer comprises a polyolefin, a compatibilizer and thermoplastic starch and does not contain any filler; wherein the second layer comprises a polyolefin and a filler and does not contain any thermoplastic starch; and wherein the first layer contacts the second layer.

Description

Background technique [0001] The present disclosure relates to multilayer films, methods of making them and to articles comprising the same. In particular, the invention relates to multilayer films comprising polyolefin and starch. [0002] Films for food, industrial and specialty packaging are under pressure to reduce their impact on the environment due to their sources being based on petroleum derivatives like ethylene. There is a growing interest in using films for packaging that contain components that are renewable or based on materials that are not derived from fossil fuels (hereinafter "environmentally friendly materials"). Often these environmentally friendly materials experience degradation in film performance over time, which makes them unsuitable for packaging applications. In addition, its mechanical properties are poor when compared to other films, and this necessitates increased film thickness, which negates any improvement in sustainability. In order to overco...
