Abstract

A portable field maintenance tool comprises a power supply and a communication circuit within a housing. A communication interface has terminals for electrically connecting to a field device and providing a composite signal comprising a power supply and a digital Amplitude Modulated (AM) communication signal. The tool may be intrinsically safe and a shunt may be used to connect a communications terminal to a power supply output to generate the composite signal. A fuse may be included to limit the maximum current at the communications interface. The maximum output voltage and power of the powersupply may also be limited. The power supply may be configured to ramp the power signal as power is initially supplied to limit the peak current on the bus. The power supplied to the terminals may befurther limited based upon measured noise signals on the communications bus, and the output limited should a threshold be exceeded. Protocols for communications may include HART or field bus. Furtheraspects of the invention include a method of communicating with a field device, and a method of controlling bus power provided by a portable field maintenance tool.
