Problems solved by technology

However, such CEMs are limited by the defined size of the matrix, and are often not large enough to handle all desired cause / effect data relationships
Furthermore, such CEMs cannot handle more complex / fine-grained causes / effects such as chain connections, linkages, levels, loops, etc.
Furthermore, large CEMs are cumbersome to implement into the control logic, and are therefore error-prone during implementation
In safety systems, maintaining an accurate CEM is necessary because errors in the CEM can be serious since failure of a normally operating safety system can result in serious injury or even death to plant personnel and damage to plant equipment and materials. Potentially multi-million dollar damage

[0033] figure 1 is a block diagram of an exemplary process plant 10 including one or more nodes 12 , 16 , 18 and 20 . exist figure 1 In the exemplary process plant 10, each of the nodes 12 and 16 includes a process controller 12a, 16a connected to one or more field devices 22 via an input / output (I / O) device 24 and 23, the input / output (I / O) device 24 may be, for example, a Foundation Fieldbus (Fieldbus) interface, a HART interface, and the like. Controllers 12a and 16a are also coupled to one or more host or operator workstations 18a and 20a in nodes 18 and 20 via a network 30, which may include, for example, a bus, a wired local area network (LAN) such as an Ethernet LAN, a wireless LAN , a wide area network (WAN), an intranet, or the like. While the controller nodes 12, 16 and their associated I / O devices 24 and field devices 22, 23 are typically located within and distributed throughout the sometimes harsh plant environment, the operator workstation nodes 18 and 20 Typ...

Abstract

A system and method for enabling access to information included in a safety requirement specification (SRS) for a process plant, the process plant controlled by a process control system including displaying, in a user interface, a cause and effect matrix (CEM) having a set of elements including a set of causes and a set of effects, wherein each of the set of causes represents a condition within the process plant and each of the set of effects represents an effect to be performed within the process plant, and wherein at least some of the set of causes and the set of effects are related as cause-effect pairs whereby the corresponding effect activates in response to an occurrence of the corresponding condition. The system and method further including receiving, via the user interface, a selection of an element of the set of elements, and, in response to receiving the selection: (i) accessing, from the SRS, a set of information associated with the element of the set of elements, and (ii) displaying the set of information in the user interface.

Description

[0001] related application [0002] This patent application is a conventional patent application that claims U.S. Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 62 / 239,657, filed October 9, 2015, entitled "A System and Method for Configuring Separated Monitor and Effect Blocks of a Process Control System" Priority and benefit of the Provisional Patent Application is hereby expressly incorporated herein by reference. technical field [0003] The present disclosure relates generally to managing process control systems within process plants, and more particularly to configuring a cause and effect matrix (CEM) associated with a process control system and creating monitoring and result blocks associated therewith. Background technique [0004] Process control systems, such as those used in chemical, petroleum, or other processes, typically include one or more process controllers communicatively coupled to at least one host computer or operator workstation and controlled via analog, di...
