[0065] A) Rapid water disinfection using vertically aligned MoS2 nanomembranes and visible light

[0066] A1) Introduction

[0067] Rapid and energy-efficient water disinfection methods are urgently needed to address global challenges related to energy and water scarcity. Solar power is an attractive renewable energy source that can be used for water disinfection through solar disinfection of drinking water (SODIS), a method adopted around the world, especially in developing countries that lack drinking water distribution systems , for sanitizing water for consumption. Sunlight can inactivate microorganisms through direct or indirect mechanisms. Direct mechanisms involve photons (usually UVB or UVA) that interact directly with nucleic acids or other essential macromolecules resulting in inactivation. The indirect me...

Abstract

Catalytic water treatment is provided using an active material driven with an optical and / or electrical excitation. The active material is MoS2, MoSe2, WS2, WSe2, MoxW1-xS2, MoxW1-xSe2, MoSySe2-y, WSySe2-y, or MoxW1-xSySe2-y, where 0<x<1 and 0<y<2. The active material is configured as one or more layered nanostructures having exposed layer edges. A metal catalyst is disposed on the active material. The combined structure of active material and metal catalyst is disposed in the water to be treated. The excitation is provided to the active material to generate one or more reactive oxygen speciesby dissociation of water, wherein the reactive oxygen species provide a water treatment.

Description

field of invention [0001] The present invention relates to water treatment. Background technique [0002] Providing potable water can be difficult, especially in undeveloped areas without water treatment infrastructure. One approach to address this need is photocatalytic water treatment, in which a catalyst is placed in the water to be treated and then irradiated to provide energy for the desired chemical reaction. [0003] However, existing materials for photocatalytic water treatment (e.g., TiO 2 ) tend to have the disadvantage of absorbing only a small portion of the solar spectrum, reducing efficiency and speed / power of processing. Attempts have been made to mitigate this efficiency loss, but the resulting materials and structures are often expensive due to manufacturing complexity and / or difficulty. Therefore, it would be a great advance in the art to provide improved catalyst-based water treatment. Summary of the invention [0004] The above problems can be solve...
