The invention discloses an infrared positioning device for mounting an iron shell on a submerged nozzle and an operation method thereof. The infrared positioning device comprises a base and an infrared gradienter, wherein a cylindrical positioning block is arranged on the upper surface of the base; the positioning block is connected with an axial casting hole; the infrared gradienter is arranged in front of the base; leveling devices used for adjusting a submerged nozzle are arranged between the base and a submerged nozzle base; when the infrared positioning device is used, the submerged nozzle is arranged on the upper surface of the base; the cylindrical positioning block is inserted into the axial casting hole; the infrared gradienter is started; the leveling devices are arranged betweenthe upper surface of the base and the lower surface of the submerged nozzle base; a dual-cross positioning line of the infrared gradienter is overlapped with the center of the base and a radial casting nozzle; the infrared positioning device is capable of ensuring that the submerged nozzle is vertically arranged and simultaneously ensuring that the side hole is not deviated; then the submerged nozzle is coated with fire clay and is covered with the iron shell; and the upper surface of the iron shell is adjusted to be horizontal state.
