The invention discloses a virtual disk file format conversion method and a device, relating to the technical field of virtualization, which can solve the problem of service interruption caused by offline conversion of virtual machine disk image file formats when a virtual machine migrates between different types of VMMs. The method comprises the following steps: establishing a mapping table of thevirtual address of a disk image file of a virtual machine VM and the physical address of a disk image file compatible with a virtual machine monitor VMM; according to the mapping table, converting avirtual address used when a user reads and writes the disk image file of the VM to a physical address in mapping relationship with the virtual address; and then performing data reading and writing onthe disk image file of the VM according to the physical address.
