Methods, apparatuses and systems directed to a portal-based, dynamically distributed application topology for cellular systems. The portal-based application topology, in one implementation, is an application architecture featuring strategic dynamic distribution of the man-machine interface (such as data acquisition and information presentation) and the backend processing aspects, of a particular application. In one implementation, all terminal interfacing aspects (such as data acquisition, data presentation) are formatted and handled by systems associated with a cellular system operator, as described below, while background processing is performed by a processing facility remote to the cellular system operator. In one implementation, the distributed application topology allows a mobile station, such as a cellular telephone, to simply act as a thin-client accessing an application server via a cellular systems operator's web portal for page-based interface screens.

Medical Devices and Coatings with Non-Leaching Antimicrobial Peptides

Antimicrobial peptides enable an alternate approach to developing antimicrobial coatings due to their targeting of the membranes of the bacteria. High specific activity is achieved by orienting the peptides so that the antimicrobial ends of the peptides maximally contact the bacteria. In one embodiment, one end of the peptide is covalently attached directly to the substrate. In another embodiment, the peptides are immobilized on the substrate using a coupling agent or tether. Non-covalent methods include coating the peptide onto the substrate or physiochemically immobilizing the peptides on the substrate using highly specific interactions, such as the biotin / avidin or streptavidin system. The compositions are substantially non-leaching, antifouling, and non-hemolytic. The immobilized peptides retain sufficient flexibility and mobility to interact with and de endocytosed by the bacteria, viruses, and / or fungi upon exposure. Immobilizing the peptides to the substrate reduces concerns regarding toxicity of the peptides and the development of antimicrobial resistance, while presenting substantially all of the peptide at the site of action at the surface of the substrate.

Battery management system employing software controls upon power failure to estimate battery duration based on battery/equipment profiles and real-time battery usage

A power management system uses software to predictively estimate remaining battery endurance by considering battery usage in context of a predetermined battery output and equipment load profiles, and appropriately issuing a shutdown alert or commencing a shutdown event as the end of battery endurance nears. More particularly, a battery supplies power to electrical equipment when a primary power source fails. Initially, the system receives one or more estimates of the battery's endurance and capability of supplying electrical power to the equipment. The system tracks battery use by prescribed electrical equipment. Utilizing software, for example, the system determines when estimated endurance minus battery usage equals a predetermined difference. Relative to this time, the system takes appropriate action(s) such as initiating shutdown of the equipment or issuing a shutdown alert.
