Embodiment Construction

[0015] The disclosed apparatus and methods are best understood in the context of the larger environment in which they operate. therefore, figure 1 An illustrative communication network 100 is shown that includes mobile devices 102 and computer systems 104A-C coupled via routing network 106 . Routing network 106 may be or include, for example, the Internet, a wide area network, or a local area network. exist figure 1 1, routing network 106 includes a network of equipment items 108, such as switches, routers, and the like. Items of equipment 108 are interconnected via point-to-point communication links 110 that transmit data between various network components, and to computer systems 104A-C. At least some of the links 110 in the network 106 are high-speed multi-lane links, such as Ethernet links operating at 10 Gb / s or higher conforming to IEEE Standard 802.3-2015 (or later).

Abstract

The present invention discloses a low power SERDES architecture and protocol. An illustrative multi-channel communication method includes: (a) receiving received signals on different receive channels; (b) converting each of the received signals into a channel of a multi-channel received data stream, wherein the converting includes demodulation and error measurements; (c) determining remote pre-equalizer adaptation information based in part on said error measurements; (d) detecting alignment marks in said multi-lane receive data stream; (e) Extracting local pre-equalizer adaptation information from or near the alignment mark in the channel received data stream; (f) using the local pre-equalizer adaptation information to adjust the coefficients of the local pre-equalizer filter; (g) periodically inserting an alignment mark into a multi-lane transmit data stream, wherein the remote pre-equalizer adaptation information is included in or inserted adjacent to the alignment mark; and (h) Each channel of the multi-channel transmit data stream is transformed into a transmit signal, wherein the transform includes modulating and applying the local pre-equalization filter.

Description

Background technique [0001] The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Standards Institute publishes the IEEE Standard for Ethernet, IEEE Std 802.3-2015, which will be familiar to those of ordinary skill in the art to which this application pertains. The standard provides common medium access for local area network (LAN) operation at selected speeds from 1Mb / s to 100Gb / s over coaxial cables, twisted pair cables, fiber optic cables and electronic backplanes in various channel signal constellations control specifications. With the continued demand for ever-increasing data rates, even as equalizers are forced to run higher symbol rates, even to the point where receiver power and dissipation are expected to reach prohibitive levels, extensions to the standard must take into account Increased channel attenuation and dispersion. A different architecture may be required to resolve this issue. Contents of the invention [0002] Accordingly, a low power serialize...
