Abstract

A uniformity control membrane can be securely engaged against an upstream side of a microneedle array and configured so that resistance to flow through the uniformity control membrane is substantiallygreater than the resistance to flow through the microneedle array. These differences in flow resistance can facilitate uniform administration of a liquid formulation into the patient's skin across abroad area and at a relatively low pressure, such as by way of capillary action. The administration of the liquid formulation into the patient's skin across the broad area can result from the liquid formulation being administered by way of at least a majority of the microneedles of the microneedle array.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to devices for delivering liquid formulations into the skin of a patient. In particular, this document relates to devices having microneedle arrays for transdermal delivery of liquid formulations. Background technique [0002] A number of devices utilizing microneedle arrays have been previously developed for the transdermal delivery of fluid drugs and other pharmaceutical compounds. For example, microneedles have the advantage of causing less pain to the patient than larger conventional needles. Furthermore, the traditional way of delivering fluid drugs subcutaneously (and often intramuscularly) via traditional needles delivers large volumes of fluid drug simultaneously, often producing peaks in drug bioavailability. For drugs with certain metabolic profiles, this is not a significant issue. However, many drugs benefit from steady-state concentrations in the patient's blood; a well-known example of such a dru...
