Embodiment Construction

[0037] refer to figure 2, which shows a high voltage spreader 50 according to a first embodiment of the present invention. The high voltage spreader 50 is a longitudinal member having a sheath 52 extending over the outer surface of the conductive member. In particular, sheath 52 has a connector 54 at one end thereof. Connector 54 is shown connected to a high voltage source 56 , such as an ignition coil. The sheath 52 has opposite ends 58 which are adapted for connection with a terminal 60 of the spark plug. The high voltage extender 50 is intended to transfer electrical energy from a high voltage source 56 to a terminal 60 of the spark plug.

[0038] image 3 A cross-sectional view of a first embodiment of the spreader 50 of the present invention is shown, with the conductive members omitted. In particular, it can be seen that the spreader 50 has a longitudinally extending sheath 52 with a connector 54 at one end and a connector 58 at the other end.

Abstract

The present invention relates to a high voltage extender for connecting a spark plug to a high voltage source, having: a spring adapted to be electrically connected to the high voltage source and the spark plug; a tube, the spring positioned within its inner passage; and a sheath, Secures above the outside of the fitting. The sheath is made of a material that is less rigid than the material of the tubing. The boot has a first end adapted to be connected to a high voltage source and a second end adapted to be connected to a spark plug such that the spring is in direct electrical connection with the spark plug and the high voltage source. The tube has one end spaced inwardly from the first end of the sheath and an opposite end spaced inwardly from the second end of the sheath.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a high voltage spreader for connecting a high voltage source to a spark plug. More specifically, the present invention relates to semi-rigid extenders that insulate conductive members that are connected at one end to an ignition coil and at an opposite end to a spark plug. Background technique [0002] Relevant art includes information disclosed under 37 CFR 1.97 and 37 CFR 1.98. [0003] Spreaders are commonly used to connect a high voltage source, such as an ignition coil, to a spark plug. These high voltage extenders are designed to transfer charge from a high voltage source (up to 43KV) to the spark plug. Typically, these spreaders are suitably insulated to prevent ground tracking from the conductive rods to the engine block. [0004] Figure 1 shows an example of a prior art high pressure spreader used and sold by Caterpillar. The high pressure spreader 10 has a machined stainless steel rod 12 with a threaded en...
