Embodiment 1

[0112] Examples 1-14. Bisphenol A epoxy resin ( GY6010 epoxy resin) and containing polyetheramine ( D-230 amine), glycerin, and a curing agent for a tertiary amine (dimethylaminocyclohexane (DMCHA)) were mixed to form a curable composition, as shown in Table 1 below. Each curable composition was cured at 80°C for 3 hours, and then at 125°C for 2 hours. The glass transition temperature of the resulting cured article was then measured by DSC, with Example 1 as reference. The following results show that a tertiary amine catalyst is required in order to react glycerol into the polymer backbone. In fact, phase separation was observed when an insufficient amount of DMCHA was used.

Abstract

The present disclosure provides a curing agent comprising a polyetheramine, a tertiary amine substantially free of an aromatic tertiary amine and glycerin. The curing agent may be combined with an epoxy resin to form a curable composition which is capable of being applied to a substrate and cured to form a cured article.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to U.S. Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 62 / 455018 filed February 6, 2017, the entire contents of which are hereby expressly incorporated herein by reference. [0003] Statement Regarding Federally Sponsored Research or Development [0004] Not applicable. technical field [0005] Field of the invention [0006] The present disclosure generally relates to a curing agent comprising a polyetheramine, a tertiary amine, and glycerin. The curing agent can be combined with the epoxy resin to form a curable composition that can be applied to a substrate and cured to form a cured article. Background technique [0007] Background of the invention [0008] Curable compositions based on epoxy resins and various curing agents are used in industry on a large scale to produce cured epoxy resins. As typical representative examples of curing agents, there are, for example, diethyle...
