Embodiment Construction

[0021] figure 1 An elevator assembly 20 is schematically shown, comprising a first cab 22 and a second cab 24 in a double deck elevator installation. The head beam 26 is connected to a lanyard 28 which may comprise, for example, a round rope or a flat belt. The first cab 22 is supported by a head beam 26 and the lanyard 28 supports the load of the first cab 22 and the second cab 24 . Cabs 22 and 24 move together in a hoistway (not shown) based on movement of rope 28 caused by machinery (not shown).

[0022] A plurality of rods 30 extend below the first cab 22 . In the example shown, the rod 30 is secured by frame members 32, such as brackets. The frame members 32 are secured to side frame members 34 which are secured to the top beam 26 . In one embodiment, the top beam 26 and side frame members 34 are part of a standard cab elevator frame.

[0023] Assembly 20 includes center beam 35 positioned below elevator car 22 in a horizontal orientation. The center beam 35 is coup...

Abstract

An illustrative example elevator assembly includes a head beam and a first elevator car supported by the head beam. A plurality of vertically oriented rods extend below the first elevator cab. A horizontally oriented center beam is coupled to a first of the bars near a first end of the center beam and to a second of the bars near a second end of the center beam. A second cab is located below the first cab and below the center beam. At least one linear actuator is at least partially supported on the center beam. The linear actuator selectively causes vertical movement of the second cab relative to the rod.

Description

Background technique [0001] Elevator systems have proven useful for carrying passengers on various floors of a building. Different building types present different challenges for providing adequate elevator service. Larger buildings with higher populations often require increased elevator system capacity, especially during peak travel times. Different approaches have been proposed to increase elevator system capacity. [0002] One approach involves increasing the number of elevator shafts or hoistways and elevator cars. This approach is limited because of the increased amount of building space required for each additional elevator. Another suggestion is to include more than one elevator car in each hoistway. This arrangement has the advantage of increasing the number of cars without having to increase the number of shafts in the building. One of the challenges associated with systems having multiple cars in a single hoistway is maintaining sufficient spacing between the c...
