Problems solved by technology

Additionally, using longitudinal force to penetrate the skin and tissue to reach the abscess carries the risk of inadvertently puncturing the underlying tissue structure
[0006] Therefore, surgical treatment of an abscess is economically expensive to the healthcare system and the patient, and also has risks associated with surgery and administration of general anesthesia

Embodiment

[0072] The following series of tests were conducted using an embodiment of the penetrating member 12 having the specifications shown in Table 1 below.

[0073] penetrating parts A B C D thread circle 1.5 3 2 3 spiral taper 12 12 8 8 Pitch (mm) 3 2 2 2 incision needed Yes Yes Yes Yes skin damage Some Moderate Yes extremely small easy access no Yes - at 1cm depth Yes Yes easy to remove Yes Yes Yes Moderate

[0074] Each penetrating member A-D is tested to determine: (i) the ability to enter and push into tissue when rotational force is applied; (ii) whether an initial incision is required; (iii) the level of skin damage or distortion; and (iv) the The ease with which the penetrating member can be removed from the tissue. The results of these tests are also included in Table 1 above. Each penetrating component was tested on the upper thigh region of a freshly frozen cadaver.

Abstract

A percutaneous drainage device for draining a fluid collection located under the skin of a patient is disclosed. The percutaneous drainage device includes a penetration component slidably engaged witha cannula. The penetration component has a piercing end adapted to penetrate tissue of a patient and introduce an open end of the cannula to a subcutaneous fluid collection site. The cannula may be held in place in the patient by an anchoring means. The cannula provides a passage through which a fluid collection may be drained from a patient. The cannula may be in fluid communication with a collection vessel, which collects fluid collection transported away from the subcutaneous fluid collection site.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to devices for percutaneous drainage. In particular, the present disclosure relates to devices positioned under the skin of a patient for accessing and draining fluid collections. Background technique [0002] Every year, millions of patients visit emergency rooms seeking medical help with skin and soft tissue infections. Most of these infections are subcutaneous abscesses, which are restricted accumulations or collections of pus and dead tissue under the skin. Patients with this common skin condition often experience pain and may also experience fever or chills. [0003] Treatment of abscesses is one of the most frequently performed hospital procedures. Some abscesses are 'simple' or 'headed' and rupture almost through the skin. These abscesses can usually be treated in an outpatient setting via an incision and drainage procedure with local anesthetic. After a local anesthetic is given, a small incision is made at t...
