As the polymer material comes in contact with body tissues of the patient it forms a protective sleeve against infections (5). The protective sleeve must be periodically clipped as it continuously or intermittently grows in an upward direction (6) outside of the body. The continual formation of the protective sleeve prevents the formation of a biofilm on the percutaneous lead that can cause the body tissue to separate from the percutaneous lead.
