Example Embodiment

[0101] Data encryption and decryption in traditional communication devices often involves multiple data transfers over the system bus. For example, when decryption is performed, encrypted data is usually first transferred from cache to external memory over the system bus. In the second step, the encryption function decrypts the encrypted data. Cryptographic functions are typically implemented in peripheral hardware devices that use the system bus to transfer encrypted data from and decrypted data back to external memory. With this configuration, the system bus should be sized at least three times the maximum data rate to provide sustained rates. Furthermore, the external memory needs to be able to obtain at least twice the maximum data rate. That is, getting a maximum data rate of 20Gbit / s means that the system bus needs to be able to handle 60Gbit / s data rates, and the external memory needs to be able to handle 40Gbit / s data rates. Therefore, there is a need to minimize th...

Abstract

The invention relates to a processing device (100) comprising a buffer (102) coupled to a system bus (104), a ciphering device (106) coupled to the system bus (104), and a memory (108) coupled to theciphering device (106). The processing device (100) is configured to operate in at least one of a deciphering mode and a ciphering mode. When the processing device (100) is configured to operate in the deciphering mode, the ciphering device (106) is configured to receive a ciphered data unit directly from the buffer (102) over the system bus (104), decipher the ciphered data unit so as to obtain adeciphered data unit, and transfer the deciphered data unit to the memory (108). When the processing device (100) is configured to operate in the ciphering mode, the ciphering device (106) is configured to receive a data unit from the memory (108), cipher the data unit so as to obtain a ciphered data unit, and transfer the ciphered data unit directly to the buffer (102) over the system bus (104).Furthermore, the invention also relates to corresponding methods, a computer program, and a computer program product.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a processing device and a communication device comprising such a processing device. Furthermore, the invention relates to a corresponding method, computer program and computer program product. Background technique [0002] In next-generation wireless systems such as the 5G system, the data rate is increasingly required, and a data rate of 20Gbit / s for the downlink and 10Gbit / s for the uplink are currently being considered. These requirements place a significant burden on the communication equipment and its ability to process data efficiently. [0003] Data processing in conventional communication devices involves the transfer of large amounts of data between different functions and / or memories within the communication device. These transfers sometimes go over the system bus, which can become a bottleneck when trying to achieve very high data rates. In some configurations, the size of the system bus needs to be three times th...
