Problems solved by technology

However, tissue welding techniques have risks associated with off-target thermal injury, resulting in nerve damage, pain, necrosis, and other complications
Additionally, some tissue welding systems create fistulas without providing any means of directing blood flow into the superficial venous system, resulting in the need for a second endovascular or surgical procedure to create a functional AVF

Embodiment Construction

[0016] Various elements of the invention are described herein as having "proximal" and "distal" ends. As used herein, "distal" and "proximal" are defined relative to the operator (ie, the medical personnel who implants the device in the patient). Thus, the proximal end is the end that is closest to the operator, while the opposite distal end is the end that is inserted first and furthest into the patient.

[0017] Various parameters are described herein as being within the "range" of two numbers. Such references will include the stated value and all intervening values. For example, if a parameter is claimed to be in the range of 2-3 units, this would include all values greater than or equal to 2 and less than or equal to 3.

[0018] The various elements of the invention are described below.

[0019] arteriovenous fistula. Various inventions disclosed herein relate to methods of forming a fistula (ie, a connection between any two blood vessels through which blood can flow...

Abstract

Provided herein are novel devices for the formation of arteriovenous fistulas, which may aid subjects in need of hemodialysis. The novel devices are provided in a non-surgical procedure, greatly decreasing the cost and increasing the convenience of placing an arteriovenous fistula. The devices are atraumatic, and consist of a sutureless anastomosis device and conduit. Methods and tools for placingthe devices in vivo are disclosed, including a magnetic-assisted method.

Description

[0001] Cross references to related patent applications [0002] This application claims the benefit of priority to U.S. Provisional Application Serial No. 62 / 521,920, entitled "Device and Method for Atraumatic and Percutaneous Formation of an Arteriovenous Fistula," filed June 19, 2017, the contents of which are incorporated herein by reference. [0003] Statement Regarding Federally Sponsored Research or Development [0004] Not applicable. Background technique [0005] Millions of people around the world suffer from end-stage renal disease or other conditions requiring hemodialysis treatment. Hemodialysis requires access to the circulatory system to withdraw, clean and reinfuse the patient's blood. Methods of accessing the patient's circulatory system include tunneling catheters, arteriovenous grafts, and arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs). The type of circulatory access access used in hemodialysis can have an important impact on the patient. Among these methods, it is wid...
