Problems solved by technology

However, temperature sensors can only monitor temperature at a single localized location
Also, it is impractical to install temperature sensors on the entire surface of the wing
Monitoring or controlling airfoil temperature becomes difficult with such a system as temperature can vary in hot and cold spots across the surface of the airfoil
This temperature change can then cause the system to overheat and malfunction

Abstract

Disclosed is a multilayer structure, comprising: a first heater layer comprising a CNT heater, wherein the CNT heater comprises a composite of carbon nanotubes and silicone; and a second heater layercomprising a PTC heater, wherein the PTC heater comprises a composite of carbon black and polymer; wherein the first heater layer and the second heater layer are first and second respectively in an electrical series; wherein the first heater layer has a negative temperature coefficient with respect to electrical resistivity; and wherein the second heater layer has a positive temperature coefficient with respect to electrical resistivity. Also disclosed is an aircraft component comprising the multilayer structure.

Description

Background technique [0001] Exemplary embodiments relate to the field of carbon nanotube heaters, and more particularly, to multilayer structures for aircraft including carbon nanotube heaters. [0002] Airplanes use electrothermal heating in their wings to prevent icing. Carbon nanotube (CNT) heaters are potential candidates for aircraft applications because of their high strength-to-weight ratio and high power density. For example, a CNT heater may include a composite of carbon nanotubes and silicone. However, at high temperatures, the electrothermal resistance of the carbon nanotube heaters decreases significantly (negative temperature coefficient), resulting in excessive power output and overheating of the airfoil. [0003] Additionally, wing deicing systems often use multiple temperature sensors to monitor and control wing surface temperature. However, temperature sensors can only monitor temperature at a single local location. In addition, it is impractical to instal...
