Problems solved by technology

However, as mentioned earlier, the use of glass fibers in bonding materials is difficult due to their susceptibility to alkaline attack in Portland cement
In addition, other fibers disclosed in this patent also have their own shortcomings, such as carbon fiber, despite its excellent strength and ability to resist alkaline attack in concrete, but its cost is relatively high

Embodiment Construction

[0034] Hereinafter, the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings. The invention is not limited to the specific embodiments described, which are described in detail to enable those skilled in the art to make and use the invention.

[0035] The structural reinforcement for reinforcing a product shown in FIG. 1 is an embodiment of the invention. It can be used to reinforce products constructed from hardenable structural materials such as concrete, asphalt, etc., by placing the structural reinforcement in the hardenable material before the material hardens. The structural reinforcement includes a reinforcing grid 10 having a set of warp tows 12 and a set of weft tows 14 arranged generally perpendicular to each other. Each tow comprises a plurality of continuous filaments, which may be composed, for example, of glass fibers (Type E glass fibers are more suitable), carbon fibers, alamede fibers or nylon fibers.

Abstract

A reinforcing grid which advantageously includes fibers of both a first type and a second type is provided. The first type of fibers have a strength sufficient to reinforce the hardenable structural material, such as concrete, after hardening. The first type of fibers also have a higher resistance to degradation in the hardenable material than the second type of fibers. As such, the first type of fibers will continue to reinforce the hardened material in the event the fibers of the second type become corroded in the hardened material. Consequently, a less expensive type of fiber can be used as the second type of fiber and can corrode in the hardenable material without concern for the strength of the hardened structural product. According to one embodiment, the first type of fibers comprises carbon fibers and the second type of fibers comprises glass fibers.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to a structural member suitable for reinforcing a product, and to methods of using the structural member to form a reinforced product. Background technique [0002] Structures made of concrete and other masonry and bonded materials often require reinforcement in their construction. These concrete aggregates have lower tensile strength and better compressive strength. When using concrete structural members, such as in bridges, buildings or similar architectural structures, reinforcements are often utilized to impart the required tensile strength. In existing and new concrete structures such as precast roads, concrete slabs, sidewalks, pipelines, etc., various shapes of steel have been used to act as reinforcements, such as perforated wire mesh, steel bars and steel gratings. Steel gratings have been used in reinforced concrete structures such as suspension bridge decks. These steel grids are a closed cell struc...
