Embodiment Construction

[0024] The present description relates to devices and techniques for providing improved low-light imaging of scenes. Throughout the description, the same reference numerals are used to identify corresponding elements.

[0025] figure 1 is a diagram of an example of the imaging unit 100 and the traffic scene 21 . In one example, imaging unit 100 is part of traffic monitoring system 200 . The imaging unit 100 includes a camera 110 , a processing unit 120 , and may further include a non-transitory computer readable medium 130 . The camera 110 has a field of view 15 and an image sensor configured to generate a first image 20 from light received at the image sensor. Image sensors may include visible light sensors (e.g., semiconductor charge-coupled devices (CCD), active pixel sensors in complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS), or N-type metal-oxide-semiconductor (NMOS, Live MOS) sensors) one or a combination of them. The field of view (FOV) 15 of the camera 110 is defin...

Abstract

The invention discloses a low-light imaging system. A traffic monitoring system for generating a low-light image of a set of objects comprising at least one road and at least one traffic signalling light, the traffic monitoring system comprising a camera and a processing unit, wherein: the camera being configured to generate a first image comprising a set of pixels, each pixel of the set of pixels comprising colour encoding values corresponding to a pixel colour, a saturation value, and a luma value, and the processing unit being configured to, for each pixel of the set of pixels: where the pixel colour corresponds to one of a first set of colours, modify the colour encoding values to reduce the saturation value of the pixel, and where the pixel colour corresponds to red and where the luma value of the pixel is below a first threshold value, modify the colour encoding values to reduce the saturation value of the pixel, where the pixel colour corresponds to red and where the luma value of the pixel is equal to or above the first threshold value, preserve the saturation value of the pixel, and generate the low-light image of the set of objects in dependence on the modified colour encoding values of the first image.

Description

Background technique [0001] A well-known camera configuration for imaging well-lit scenes (eg, daytime scenes) and low-light scenes (eg, night-time scenes) is a camera configuration with a removable IR (infrared) cut filter. An IR cut filter is a filter that removes light having a wavelength greater than 700 nanometers (for example, near-infrared light or NIR light). IR cut filters can be used to image daytime scenes where NIR light can affect the imaging sensor and make accurate capture of visible light more difficult. For imaging low-light scenes, accurate color representation can be difficult or impossible. So instead it is a priority to capture as much light as possible and remove the IR cut filter. This ensures that the amount of light reaching the light sensor is maximized. [0002] In an important use case for low-light cameras, nighttime traffic scenes are imaged to capture and record the movement of vehicles in the scene. Since vehicles moving in a scene typically...
