Embodiment Construction

[0055] figure 1 The movements and degrees of freedom of a robot 100 configured for endoscopy, in particular colonoscopy, according to a first embodiment of the present invention are schematically shown. The robot 100 includes a generally annular lead bladder 102 and a generally annular subsequent bladder 104, each bladder 102, 104 configured for selective expansion to anchor a portion of the robot 100 within a conduit (not shown) . A cylindrical soft-pneumatic actuator (SPA: soft-pneumatic actuator) 106 is located between the leading airbag 102 and the subsequent airbag 104, which is operable to expand or contract the robot 100 in the longitudinal direction. Cylindrical cavity (in image 3 Most clearly shown in ) extends through the subsequent bladder 104 , the actuator 106 and the lead bladder 102 for providing wiring and / or instrumentation (not shown).

[0056] as well image 3 As shown, the actuator 106 includes a plurality of chambers (three in this case) arranged such...

Abstract

This invention relates to a robot to improve the inspection of a pipe or lumen. More particularly, this invention relates to a soft-pneumatic robot for endoscopy that is suitable for performing colonoscopy procedures. The robot of this invention comprises leading and tailing balloons configured for selective inflation to anchor a portion of the robot within the pipe or lumen and a soft-pneumatic actuator that is located between the leading balloon and the trailing balloon. The soft-pneumatic actuator is operable to extend or contract the robot in a longitudinal direction, in addition to positioning the leading balloon in a 360 degree circumference around the longitudinal direction by pneumatically controlling a fluid within a plurality of chambers within the soft-pneumatic actuator.

Description

technical field [0001] Embodiments of the present invention relate to a robot for endoscopy, or more generally, to a robot for inspecting a duct or lumen. Specifically, but not exclusively, embodiments of the present invention relate to a robot suitable for colonoscopy. Background technique [0002] Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cause of cancer death worldwide. Regular screening of asymptomatic people can greatly reduce mortality. CRC screening includes several procedures, although the gold standard remains optical colonoscopy (OC) because of its high sensitivity and low false-negative rate. However, OC is unpleasant and can cause pain and discomfort to the subject. New technologies such as capsule endoscopy (CE) constitute alternative painless solutions and are increasingly used in CRC despite their limitations (eg passive motion and lack of on-board instrumentation) Screening. [0003] Typically, colonoscopy is performed by a trained colonoscopy ope...
