Problems solved by technology

This can occur in a horizontal configuration of the tower section, where dirt and debris under the tower is a problem, or in a vertical configuration, where viewing angles make it difficult to assess the uniformity of the strap wrap pattern
Generally, strap installation is difficult, time-consuming, and results in inconsistent strap placement

Abstract

A wind turbine includes a tower and a vortex induced vibration (VIV) mitigation system configured on the tower. The VIV mitigation system has a rod attached to an outer surface of the tower and extending longitudinally along an axis of the tower. A plurality of strake support guides extend laterally from and spaced along the rod, the strake support guides including lengths and shapes to retain strakes supported thereon. The strake is wound around the tower in a spiral pattern with at least a plurality of turns of the strake laid on and supported by the strake support guide.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to wind turbine towers, and more particularly, to systems and methods for attaching strap-type vortex suppression devices to wind turbine towers. Background technique [0002] Wind turbine towers and other types of generally elongated tower structures are subject to vortex induced vibrations (VIV). Without mitigation, and under suitable wind conditions, vortices would coherently shed from alternating sides of the tower, causing fluctuating loads and increasing the rocking motion of the tower perpendicular to the wind direction. With modern wind turbine towers, this movement can reach amplitudes of + / - 2m on site, making continuous tower and machine head installation essentially impossible, which can lead to costly crane downtime and overall project delays. Also, if the vibrations persist, severe fatigue damage can be caused to the lower tower section, which can greatly reduce tower life. This issue will become ...
