Abstract

The present invention includes star polymers which can be used as viscosity index improvers in oil compositions formulated for high performance engines. The star polymers have tetrablock copolymer arms of hydrogenated polyisoprene-polybutadiene-polyisoprene with a block of polystyrene and which provide excellent low temperature performance in lubricating oils, exhibit good thickening efficiency, and are finishable as polymer crumb.

field of invention [0001] This invention relates to a hydrogenated isoprene and butadiene star polymer, and oil compositions containing the star polymer. The present invention more particularly relates to oil compositions having excellent low temperature properties and viscosifying performance and star polymers having excellent finishing properties. Background of the invention [0002] The viscosity of lubricating oil changes with temperature. Oils are generally defined by their viscosity index, which is a function of the oil's viscosity at a specified lower temperature and at a specified upper temperature. The specified lower temperature and the specified upper temperature change from year to year, but at any given time, are fixed in the ASTM test procedure (ASTM D2270). Currently, the lower temperature specified in the test is 40°C and the upper temperature is 100°C.
