AI Technical Summary

Problems solved by technology

As the functionality and performance of the application increases, the complexity of the control panel and the number of buttons installed on the control panel increases
Such control panels are often difficult for the user to understand, give the user little flexibility, and do not provide the user with the opportunity to adjust and check while cooking is in progress
The complexity and inflexibility of such a control system increases the likelihood that the food will be cooked correctly

Embodiment Construction

[0026] FIG. 1 is a front view of an oven 10 including a control system 12 . The oven 10 includes a large body 14 consisting of a top 16, a bottom 18 connected to the top 16 by a first side wall 20, a second side wall 22 and a back wall (not shown). The case is embedded in a cooking cavity (not shown) for housing food (not shown) during cooking. A door 26 is hingedly attached to the front face 28 of the cabinet 14 and is rotatable by a handle 29 to be selectively opened and closed to access the cooking cavity. The oven door 26 includes a window 30 fitted with about 1 / 8 inch thick darkened glass, such as high temperature resistant glass known in the art. The window 30 makes it possible for the user to visually observe the cooking cavity during cooking without exposing the user to the glare generated when the oven 10 is operated. The oven 10 also includes a pressed exhaust grill 32 .

Abstract

A speed cooking oven includes a combination of radiant cooking units and a microwave cooking unit manually controllable using a rotary dial input selector coupled to a control panel for user selection of desired oven features. An alphanumeric display displays prompts and information to guide users through a feature selection process. A microprocessor executes a cooking algorithm based upon user defined constants entered via the rotary dial according to prompts on the alphanumeric display.

Description

[0001] Cross-references to related applications [0002] This application claims priority to US Provisional Application No. 60 / 115,744, filed January 13, 1999, and US Provisional Application No. 60 / 150,395, filed August 23, 1999. Background of the invention [0003] The present invention relates generally to ovens, and more particularly to control systems for combination ovens that use both optical radiation and microwave energy. [0004] Known ovens are for example any of the microwave or radiation cooking type. For example, microwave ovens contain magnetrons for generating radio frequency (RF) energy for cooking food in the oven cooking cavity. Although microwave ovens cook food faster than radiant ovens, microwave ovens do not burn food. So microwave ovens are generally not used to cook as many types of food as radiant ovens. [0005] A radiant cooking oven contains an energy source, such as a lamp, that produces the light energy used to cook the food. Radiant ovens sea...
