Embodiment Construction

[0019] A first object of the present invention is to produce a microporous membrane and its product laminated with a nonwoven fibrous fabric on a high-speed production machine. Another object of the present invention is a method of producing such a microporous membrane product with regular thickness, uniform pores and no cracks. A. Raw material for the method

[0020] As stated above, the present invention achieves these and other objects by the following preferred forms:

[0021] The following compositions were first melt blended:

[0022] (a) from about 35% to about 45% by weight linear low density polyethylene,

[0023] (b) from about 3% to about 10% by weight of low density polyethylene,

[0024] (c) about 40% by weight to about 55% by weight of calcium carbonate filler particles, and

[0025] (d) from about 2% to about 6% by weight of styrene-butadiene-styrene, styrene-isoprene-styrene and styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene Styrenic triblock copolymers and blends the...

Abstract

Microporous film products permeable to moisture vapor and which act as barriers to liquid are made by a high speed method. Such microporous products are made at speeds in the order of above 500 fpm to about 1200 fpm. Thermoplastic polymers are melt blended to contain about 35 % to about 45 % by weight of a linear low density polyethylene, about 3 % to about 10 % by weight of a low density polyethylene; about 40 % to about 55 % by weight calcium carbonate filler particles, and about 2 % to about 6 % by weight of a triblock polymer of styrene.

Description

Background of the invention [0001] Methods of making microporous membrane products have been known for some time. For example US3832267 to Liu teaches melt embossing a polyolefin film containing a dispersed amorphous polymer phase prior to stretching or orientation to enhance the gas and moisture vapor transmission capacity of the film. According to US3832267 to Liu, a crystalline polypropylene film having a dispersed amorphous polypropylene phase is first embossed prior to biaxial stretching to produce an oriented non-porous film with greater permeability. Utilizing this dispersed amorphous phase provides microporosity, thereby increasing the permeability of otherwise non-porous membranes to increase moisture vapor permeability (MVT). The embossed film is preferably embossed followed by stretching. [0002] In 1976, Schwarz published an article describing polymer blends and compositions for the production of microporous substances (Eckhard C.A. Schwartz (Biax-Fiberfilm), "N...
