Embodiment Construction

[0039] Figure 1 shows a timing based servo system constructed in accordance with the present invention. The system includes a drive that receives a data cartridge 14 that is connected by a data cable 18 to a host processor 16 . The cassette comprises a box 19 containing a roll 20 of magnetic tape. The present system, constructed for use of servo control information, consists of a flux-switching repeating servo pattern recorded in a track on magnetic tape 20 in a data cartridge and extending across the track width to follow a magnetic servo read head at A servo position information signal generated by reading the servo control information as it moves across the track width in the translational direction is constantly changing to indicate the relative position of the head within the track. Tape drive 12 may read the servo control information and generate a positioning signal to control the position of the associated data read head, or use a magnetic servo write head to write th...

Abstract

The present invention relates to a track following servo system for magnetic tape system, wherein the conversion across servo track width in a magnetic servo pattern is recorded at more than one azimuthal orientation. The timing of a signal derived from reading at any point across the width of such a pattern varies continuously as the read head is moved across the servo track. The pattern is read by a servo read head whose width is small compared to the servo track pattern. The combination of a wide servo pattern and a narrow servo read head offers excellent position sensing linearity and dynamic range. In the preferred embodiment, the servo read head is also narrow with respect to the data tracks, thus eliminating the positioning detecting error greatly.

Description

[0001] This application is a divisional application of Chinese Patent Application No. 95104774.4 filed on April 25, 1995, entitled "A Timing-Based Servo System for Magnetic Tape Systems". technical field [0002] The present invention relates generally to recording and reading data on a magnetic storage medium, and more particularly to a servo control system for maintaining the position of a magnetic head relative to a track on a magnetic storage medium and a data storage system thereof. Background technique [0003] Recording and reading data on tracks of magnetic storage media requires precise positioning of the magnetic read / write head. The read / write head must quickly move to and stay over the center of the particular track where data is being recorded and read. The magnetic head records and reads data as relative motion in switching directions occurs between the head and the magnetic storage medium. The head translates from one track across the track width to the other...
