Embodiment Construction

[0053] With reference to the accompanying drawings, figure 1 An electrosurgical device is shown comprising a generator 1 having an output socket 2 providing an RF output via a connection line 4 to an instrument in the form of a handpiece 3 . The start of the generator 1 can be completed by the machine head 3 via the control connection of the line 4, or by the foot switch mechanism 5, as shown in the figure, the foot switch mechanism 5 is separately connected to the generator 1 by the foot switch connection line 6 of the rear. In the illustrated embodiment, the foot switch mechanism 5 has two foot switches 5a and 5b for selecting the drying mode and the vaporizing mode of the generator 1, respectively. The front panel of the generator has push buttons 7a and 7b for setting the drying and vaporizing power values, respectively, which are indicated in the display 8 . A push button 9a is provided as selection means for selecting between drying and vaporizing modes. An electrosur...

Abstract

An electrosurgical system comprises a radio frequency generator (1), an electrosurgical instrument (E1), and a fluid enclosure (42). The generator (1) has a radio frequency output for delivery of power to the electrosurgical instrument (E1) when immersed in an electrically-conductive fluid. The electrosurgical instrument (E1) has an electrode assembly (32) at the distal end thereof, the electrode assembly comprising a tissue treatment electrode (34), and a return electrode (38) axially spaced therefrom in such a manner as to define, in use, a conductive fluid path that completes an electrical circuit between the tissue treatment electrode and the return electrode. The fluid enclosure (42) is adapted to surround an operation site on the skin of a patient or an incision leading to a cavity surgically created within the patient's body. The fluid enclosure (42) includes sealing means (44) for sealing against the patient's tissue, and the fluid enclosure includes at least one port (50a, 52a) through which the electrosurgical (E1) is insertable, and through which the electrically-conductive fluid can enter and / or leave the enclosure.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to an electrosurgical system for the treatment of tissue in the presence of an electrically conductive liquid medium, and in particular to such a system comprising a liquid enclosure which facilitates immersion on or in the patient's body Tissues, so the system can be used to vaporize, coagulate, desiccate, or otherwise thermally denature such tissues. Background technique [0002] Endoscopic electrosurgery is useful for treating tissue in body cavities, usually in the presence of a distending medium. When the distending medium is a liquid, it is commonly referred to as underwater electrosurgery, a term denoting electrosurgery in which an animate patient is treated at the surgical site with an electrosurgical instrument having a therapeutic electrode(s) immersed in a liquid. organization for treatment. [0003] Underwater surgery is often performed using endoscopic techniques, where the endoscope...
