Problems solved by technology

Other types of aircraft are not optimally suited for this task as they are limited by the amount of fuel they use which is heavy, expensive and runs out very quickly
Typically these other types of aircraft cannot remain above their intended position for all extremely large durations and thus have limited application in performing these missions

Embodiment Construction

[0032] The foregoing summary, and the invention defined by the enumerated claims, may be better understood by referring to the following detailed description, which should be read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings. The detailed description of certain preferred embodiments of this communication system is not intended to limit the enumerated claims, but rather serves to provide specific examples thereof, as the following statements allow for the building and use of an inventive embodiment.

[0033] Preferred aircraft for use in the present invention

[0034] The present invention preferably includes the use of an aircraft as a substantially geostationary platform with robust positioning requirements. According to the present invention, the preferred vehicle has a structure similar to that of the Pathfinder, Centurion and Helios vehicles, as described in the Background of the Invention. While the preferred aircraft structure is described below, further details are p...

Abstract

This disclosure provides a communications system using a span-loaded flying wing, traveling at relatively slow speeds, that can remain airborne for long periods of time. The communications system uses the airplane as a long term high altitude platform that can serve at least one of a number of potential functions. One function is to link to a ground station using radio wave signals and a satellite using optical signals. Another function is to serve as a relay station between ground communication nodes and individual end-users. Because the aircraft can tightly hold a station, the end-user's antennas do not need to be continuously adjustable. For such a system, a large number of aircraft can be used, with the end-user antennas being configured for a narrow beamwidth so as to allow frequency reuse for different communication links.

Description

[0001] This application claims priority to US Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 60 / 196,058, filed April 10, 2000, which is hereby incorporated by reference for all purposes. [0002] The present invention relates to a wireless communication system, in particular to a wireless communication system using an aircraft. Background of the invention [0003] With the rapid development of Internet and multimedia applications, the challenge of providing high-bandwidth, short-distance connections to end users has increased. Communication signals may be communicated to the aforementioned users via a variety of different types of communication systems. Wired, terrestrial systems typically provide high speed communications for very large bandwidth signals. However, the infrastructure for the above system is expensive and time-consuming to build, maintain and upgrade, and it cannot support mobile communication alone. Wireless systems using transmission towers provide relatively hi...
