Embodiment Construction

[0008] figure 1 is a schematic block diagram of an embodiment of a mechanism for cleaving an optical fiber 1 according to the present invention.

[0009] The optical fiber 1 is accommodated in a fiber cutter, such as known manually operated cutters. In a manner known in the art, the cutter comprises a holder 2 and a handle 3 pivotally connected to the holder 2 in order to press the optical fiber 1 towards the tensioned, bent and cut in the holder 2. Mechanical device (not shown) in order to cleave the optical fiber 1. The optical fiber 1 is placed in the holder 2 by means of eg a robot arm (not shown).

[0010] According to the invention, the handle 3 of the cutter is operated by a motor rather than by hand.

[0011] in such as figure 1 In the embodiment shown, the handle 3 is manipulated by the shaft 4 of the linear motor 5 via the rod 6 pivoting about the spindle 7 . The end of the rod 6 is provided with rollers so that the roller 8 is in contact with the end of the sha...

Abstract

An arrangement for cutting an optical fibre comprises a fibre cutter for cutting the fibre. A motor is provided to operate the cutter. To start a cutting movement, the motor is controlled by a control unit in response to a start signal. The start signal is generated when the fibre is located in the cutter. A detector is connected to the control unit to detect when the fibre snaps off and in response thereto cause the control unit to generate a stop signal to stop the cutting movement. If no fibre snap off is detected, the cutting movement is automatically stopped at a predetermined position of the cutter.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to optical fibers, and more particularly to a mechanism for cleaving such optical fibers. Background technique [0002] Today, optical fibers are cut by means of manually operated fiber cutters. Such a cleaver includes a holder for receiving an optical fiber and a mechanism for tensioning, bending and cleaving the optical fiber. [0003] The use of such manually operated cutters does not ensure continuous identical cuts for the operator. In addition, the cutter must be frequently readjusted due to the operator's indelicate work on the cutter. Contents of the invention [0004] It is an object of the present invention to provide a mechanism for automatically cleaving optical fibers to ensure continuous identical cleaving. [0005] This object is achieved by the mechanism of the invention in which a motor is provided to operate the cutter. Depending on the activation signal from the control unit, the motor is...
