Problems solved by technology

[0006] Failure to identify remaining wire could result in serious damage to wire-using equipment
It would be uneconomical to not be able to accurately identify how much wire is left on the wire reel and thus replace the wire reel before it is possible to run out of wire

Embodiment Construction

[0042] The principle of shielding the magnetic field lines 11 , 12 of the bar magnet 10 by the metal wire 1 is shown in FIGS. 1 a and 1 b. The bar magnet 10 is a cylindrical permanent magnet which is magnetized such that the magnetic poles are located at both ends of the bar magnet 10, respectively. The magnetic field initially extends in all radial directions, with the field lines 11 , 12 running essentially parallel to the orientation of the bar magnet 10 . In the region where the flux lines 12 reach the ferromagnetic wire 1 , the flux lines 12 run within the wire 1 , and the magnetic field is shielded on the other side of the coil of the wire 1 . A reed relay 20 provided there is therefore not responsive. The reed relay 20 is a switch comprising two closely adjacent wires 21 which attract each other when a magnetic field is present and thus close a current loop. Of course, Hall probes can also be used as sensors for the magnetic field.

Abstract

The wire coil has side walls (40) on both sides and a coil drum (30) with a magnet (10) fixed in the coil body. The installed magnet position in the coil body is such that the magnetic field lines along the magnet are arranged essentially parallel to the winding direction of the wire on the coil drum. The distance of the magnet from a coil wall is such that a defined number of windings remains when all windings above the magnet are wound off. AN Independent claim is also included for the following: (a) a method of detecting the wire remaining on a drum.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a device for storing metal wire, in particular to a metal wire reel according to the preamble of claim 1 and to a method for identifying the remaining metal wire on such a metal wire reel. Background technique [0002] Typically, devices of the described type are used to supply wire to a wire processing machine, for example a plant for producing wire comb binders for stack binding of sheet-like printed material. [0003] In plants where workpieces or semi-finished products are manufactured from wire or where welding of wire is required, the wire is drawn from the wire coil. A user of such a device can usually easily identify by glancing at the coil of wire when the wire has reached its end. However, in some applications it is difficult to see into the reel or when there are a large number of reels, thereby making it difficult for an operator to manually check the wire status on the wire reel. It would be advantageous to have ...
