Embodiment Construction

[0035] Referring to Figure 1, there is shown an apparatus for separating particulate material according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention. The device consists of a rotating longitudinal tube 2 with fixed end plates 4 .

[0036] An input 6 for receiving particulate material to be separated or sorted is located on the opposite end of the tube 2 with respect to the end plate 4 . The fixed end plate 4 acts as the output of the device and has two holes 8, 10 for removing particles from the tube 2. The size and position of the holes 8, 10 determine the size or density of particles to be extracted in each hole. The holes or openings 8, 10 in the end plate 4 are arranged at different radial positions depending on the desired cut-off size or fraction of the particulate material to be withdrawn. One or more size fractions can be removed simultaneously. Smaller screw conveyors (not shown) near the holes 8, 10 remove the sorted particulate material located around the h...

Abstract

A method of separating particulate material of differing size or density including the steps of: tumbling the particulate material to produce continuous or discrete avalanches in the surface of the particulate material to move particles of smaller size or higher density towards the centre of the particulate material and particles of larger size (16) or lower density radially outward from the centre of the particulate material; and extracting particles at selected radial locations (8, 10). A device for separating particulate material of differing size or density is also provided.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for separating particulate material. In particular, the invention relates to devices for sorting, sorting or filtering particulate material. Background technique [0002] The term "particulate material" means granular or powdered material such as sand, ore, rock, gravel, grain, seeds and other similar materials. [0003] Picking or sorting units are used in several industries such as construction, recycling and mining. These devices are used to separate the particulate material from other undesired substances depending on its size. This classification usually employs screening techniques. [0004] Devices for sorting granular material are known in the form of rotating cylindrical screens having holes of predetermined size and a series of rotating single rows of brushes located within the rotating screen. The auger feeds the granular material into the screen, and the rotating brushes drive the ...
