Problems solved by technology
These therapies reduce IOP, but they do not directly target the pathogenic mechanisms present on the retina and optic nerve, where the disease continues
Furthermore, many of these active agents are often associated with adverse effects
There are currently no generally accepted treatments for the control of glaucomatous retinopathy and optic neuropathy

Description
Background of the invention [0001] 1. field of invention [0002] The present invention relates to the field of glaucoma. More specifically, the present invention provides methods of preventing glaucomatous retinopathy using compositions comprising at least one non-feminizing estrogen. [0003] 2. Description of related fields [0004] "Glaucoma" is a group of debilitating eye diseases that are among the leading causes of preventable blindness in the United States and other developed countries. Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is the most common form of glaucoma. The disease is characterized by degeneration of the trabecular meshwork (TM), resulting in an impairment of the normal ability of aqueous humor to leave the eye and an inability to close the space between the iris and cornea (eg, the "corner") (Langham (1979); Segawa (1979 ); Rohen (1983)). Such obstructions in this disease are characterized by elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), which, if not treated in ...
