Embodiment Construction

[0021] As shown in the accompanying drawings for illustration, the present invention is embodied in an apparatus and method for providing adjustable resistance. The resistance can be adjusted over a resistance range of several orders of magnitude. Furthermore, the adjustable resistors are easy to manufacture and require very little circuit substrate surface area.

[0022] figure 2 An embodiment of an integrated adjustable resistor 200 according to an embodiment of the invention is shown. The integrated adjustable resistor 200 includes a first electrode 212 and a second electrode 214 . Phase change medium 210 is electrically connected to first electrode 212 and second electrode 214 . A tunable pulse generator (energy supply circuit) 220 may be used to apply variable amounts of energy to the phase change medium 210 . The resistance of the phase change medium 210 changes continuously with the amount of energy applied to the phase change medium 210 . The embodiment also inclu...

Abstract

The invention includes an integrated adjustable resistor. The integrated adjustable resistor includes a first electrode, a second electrode, and a phase change medium electrically connected to the first electrode and the second electrode. The integrated adjustable resistor further includes an adjustable pulse generator for applying a variable amount of energy to the phase change medium. A resistance of the phase change medium is continuously dependent upon the amount of energy applied to the phase change medium. A resistance dependent circuit is electrically connected to the first electrode and the second electrode. Operation of the resistance dependent circuit is continuously dependent upon the resistance of the phase change medium.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to analog circuits, and more particularly, the present invention relates to tunable phase change material resistors. Background technique [0002] There are many electronic circuit applications that require the use of variable resistors. Many of these applications require useful resistance ranges that vary by several orders of magnitude. FIG. 1 shows an adjustable resistor 10 which is used to set circuit parameters of a resistance sensitive circuit 20 . The resistance of the adjustable resistor 10 can be used, for example, to set the gain of an amplifier or the oscillation frequency of an oscillator. [0003] One way to create a variable resistor is to use a strip resistor. Ribbon resistors require (physical) trimming of the resistive material until the desired resistance is obtained. This requires an iterative method that can both trim the resistive material and monitor the resulting resistance. A limitatio...
