Abstract

A method and system applicable within a mobile transmission system for adaptively allocating downlink data rates to access terminals to compensate for channel fading. According to the method of the invention, a downlink data rate is selected according to a determined signal-to-noise ratio level, wherein the downlink data rate is related to a specified signal-to-noise ratio threshold to achieve a specified data packet error rate. Next, the packet is transmitted to the access terminal at the selected downlink data rate. In response to successfully decoding the data packet at the access terminal, the signal-to-noise ratio threshold assigned for the selected downlink data rate is lowered such that subsequent data rate selection is adaptively optimized. In response to data packet decoding errors, the SNR threshold is abruptly increased to maintain the specified packet error rate.
