[0013] DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
[0014] Accordingly, the present invention provides a nuclear fuel for use in a nuclear reactor comprising an actinide nitride comprising a compound enriched to at least about 50% 15 N nitrogen. Preferably, the actinide nitrides comprising are enriched to at least about 90% 15 N nitrogen. More preferably, the actinide nitride comprises enriched to at least about 95% 15 N nitrogen. Suitable actinides include uranium, plutonium, and other elements in the actinide series. A preferred actinide is uranium. The following description refers specifically to uranium nitride, but also describes actinide nitrides suitable for use in the present invention.
[0015] The stoichiometric ratio of uranium to nitrogen is preferably 1:1, but can vary from about 1:1 to about 1:2. Stoichiometric UN is preferred because it provides better corrosion resistance and minimal fission gas evolution.
[0016] As mentioned above, when compare...
