Abstract

A method and apparatus for plasma spraying a portion of a workpiece, such as a gas turbine compressor blade, without shielding any portion of the workpiece. The device includes a plasma device having an anode, a cathode and an arc generator for generating an arc between the anode and the cathode. Arc gas emitters inject inert gas across the arc. The arc is operable to ionize the gas to create a plasma flow. A powder nozzle extends through the anode, and powder material is sprayed into the plasma stream to be delivered onto the workpiece.
