[0031]The particulate natural magnesium hydroxide used as filler material according to the invention is preferably prepared from coarsely comminuted brucite. Brucite can exist in essentially pure form, but is more commonly found in association with other minerals such as calcite, aragonite, talc, or magnesite, often in the form of layers between silicate deposits, chlorite in the form of stone or shale. The term "natural magnesium hydroxide" as used herein includes all forms and occurrences of brucite, and its processed (eg pulverized) derivatives.

Abstract

The invention provides particulate natural magnesium hydroxide (e.g. brucite) having a d90 less than or equal to 6.2 m, as measured by CILAS, and a particulate filler material for use in a polymeric composition, particularly but not exclusively a flame-retardant polymeric composition, the filler material comprising the particulate natural magnesium hydroxide and optionally one or more other particulate inorganic material (e.g. alumina trihydrate).

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to particulate natural magnesium hydroxide (also known as brucite), a process for its production and compositions comprising the brucite as filler, in particular (but not limited to) flame retardant polymer compositions. Background technique [0002] Particulate magnesium hydroxide filler materials are known to provide flame retardancy and self-extinguishing properties to polymer compositions such as plastics used in cable insulation and the like. [0003] It is generally desirable that the magnesium hydroxide used in the polymer composition have a fine particle size. This is because the mechanical properties of the polymer such as tensile strength, flexural strength, etc. are affected by the particle size of the additives added to the polymer.
