Embodiment Construction

[0021] Example Figures 1 and 2 schematically show a form of light redirecting film system 1 according to an embodiment of the present invention. The light redirecting film system 1 may include a light redirecting film 2 that redistributes more of the light emitted by the backlight (or other light source) toward a direction that is more normal to the film surface. Film 2 can be used to redistribute light from almost any light source used for illumination into a desired viewing angle. For example, the film 2 can be used in a display D (such as in liquid crystal displays, in notebook computers, word processors, avionics displays, cell phones and PDAs) to make the display brighter. The liquid crystal display may be of any type including a transmissive liquid crystal display as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 , a reflective liquid crystal display as shown in FIG. 3 , or a transflective liquid crystal display as shown in FIG. 4 .

[0022] The reflective liquid crystal display D shown in FIG...

Abstract

The invention relates to an apparatus and method of making a solid film. Viscous material (163) is input into a nip between a patterned roller (165) and a belt (167). The nip between the patterned roller (165) and belt (167) is facilitated by a compliant roller (169). Accordingly, a film may be produced that has a plurallity of discrete optical elements and a smooth backside.

Description

technical field [0001] Embodiments of the invention relate to a method of making a thermoplastic film having an optical component on one side thereof and a smooth surface on the other side thereof. Background technique [0002] Films with patterned surfaces have a variety of applications. For example, photographic paper may include films with matte or glossy coatings. Such matte coatings or glossy coatings can produce the desired effect on photographic paper when viewed by a random observer. A matte or glossy finish requires a certain tolerance (ie, a certain level of precision) in the manufacturing process of the photographic paper. As the tolerances of the manufacturing process become higher and higher, the manufacturing process generally becomes more complex and expensive. In other words, the tolerances required to produce a patterned film for photographic paper may be significantly lower than the tolerances required to produce a light redirecting film for a liquid cry...
