Abstract

The invention relates to a process for continuously producing chlorine dioxide comprising the steps of: diluting sulfuric acid of an initial concentration exceeding about 90 wt % with water; bringing the diluted sulfuric acid to a temperature below about 100 DEG C; feeding to a reactor the diluted sulfuric acid having a temperature below about 100 DEG C through a first feeding nozzle; feeding to said reactor an aqueous solution comprising alkali metal chlorate and hydrogen peroxide through a second feeding nozzle, wherein said first and second feeding nozzles are opposite to and directed against each other; reacting the alkali metal chlorate with the mineral acid and the hydrogen peroxide to form a product stream containing chlorine dioxide; and, withdrawing the product stream from the reactor. The invention further relates to an apparatus for producing chlorine dioxide.

Description

field of invention [0001] The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for the production of chlorine dioxide from sulfuric acid, alkali metal chlorates and hydrogen peroxide. Background of the invention [0002] Chlorine dioxide is used for various purposes such as pulp bleaching, grease bleaching, water purification and removal of organic material from industrial waste. Since chlorine dioxide is unstable in storage, it must be produced on site. [0003] Chlorine dioxide can be produced by reacting an alkali metal chlorate and a mineral acid, preferably sulfuric acid, with a reducing agent in an aqueous reaction medium. For production in small-scale plants, such as for water purification applications or small-scale bleaching plants, the chlorine dioxide-containing solution is recovered directly from the reactor without separation of chlorine dioxide gas from the reaction medium ( Preferably after dilution with water) is advantageous. Such methods are described...
