Problems solved by technology

[0010] Especially when compact pressure swing adsorption systems are required, these issues are complicated by complex fluid manifolding requiring the connection of throttling or pressure regulating valves
Such a manifold arrangement disadvantageously increases the manufacturing and assembly time required to produce a pressure swing adsorption system

Embodiment Construction

[0022] Several embodiments of the invention are now described with reference to the drawings, wherein like reference numerals indicate like or corresponding parts throughout the several views.

[0023] FIG. 1 shows containers 10 and 20 , which are part of a treatment device 1A. Each container 10 and 20 can comprise a fluid handling material, such as an absorbent material. In this disclosure, the processing device 1A is illustrated for use in a pressure swing adsorption process; however, the processing device 1A can also be used for a wide variety of fluid processing applications. For example, the treatment device 1A may be used to treat fluids in gaseous form or in liquid form, depending on the functionality of the fluid treatment components comprised in the treatment device 1A. Furthermore, the processing apparatus 1A can be used in a wide range of operating conditions, such as high-pressure gas conditions.

Abstract

A method for reducing shock during a flow of fluid between a higher pressure vessel and a lower pressure vessel. The method includes the steps of providing a conduit between the higher pressure vessel and the lower pressure vessel, and minimizing a rate of pressure change within the second vessel caused by the flow of fluid along the conduit from the higher pressure vessel. The minimizing step includes controlling a rate of flow of fluid between the first vessel and the second vessel over a predetermined duration.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to fluid handling systems, and more particularly to flow control in pressure swing adsorption systems. Background technique [0002] Pressure swing adsorption is commonly used in gas purification processes. Among other uses, pressure swing adsorption is used to separate oxygen and nitrogen from air, to separate pure helium from natural gas, and to purify hydrogen from "reformed" gas mixtures. The most efficient pressure swing adsorption process utilizes multiple vessels (also referred to as "beds") interacting through a number of stages to continuously produce product at high pressure. [0003] A typical pressure swing adsorption cycle includes a production step in which gas flows into a high pressure vessel and certain species of gas are adsorbed while product species pass through a column. After the production step, a pressure equalization step is used to transfer the product gas present in the void space of ...
