Problems solved by technology

In addition, depending on the thickness of the substrate on which the organic semiconductor and electrodes are disposed, again a substantial portion (eg, greater than 10%) of light may emerge from the sides of the device, which may be seldom useful for general lighting purposes
In high-volume lighting applications, this loss can represent a large amount of wasted energy

Embodiment Construction

[0018] figure 1 An exemplary organic light emitting diode (OLED) 10 is presented. As can be seen therein, OLED 10 generally includes an organic layer 12 disposed between a first electrode or anode 14 and a second electrode or cathode 16 . For example, organic layer 12 may include a plurality of organic polymer layers. For example, the organic layer 12 may be disposed at a thickness of about 100 nm through a spin casting process. The number, type and thickness of the individual polymer layers making up the organic layer 12 can vary depending on the application, as will be appreciated by those skilled in the art. For example, different combinations of organic materials can be used to provide different colors of light emission, as will be understood by those skilled in the art. The first electrode or anode 14 may include a transparent conductive oxide (TCO) layer, such as indium tin oxide (ITO). For example, the thickness of anode 14 may be about 100 nm. Anode 14 may be disp...

Abstract

Provided is a lighting device for extracting light, which captures the light emission that would suffer a loss by absorption in an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) 10 and enhances the light emission from the OLED. The lighting device 28 has a side part 34 with an angle, which has a reflective material 36 thereon. The lighting device 28 enhances light emission of the OLED 10 so that the OLED 10 can be mounted for area-lighting applications. An array 44 may be further implemented, which is provided with a plurality of respective side parts 34 having angles with respect to a plurality of recessed regions.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a light source, and more particularly to a light source for extracting light from a planar light source. Background technique [0002] High-efficiency light sources are continuously being developed to compete with traditional area lighting sources such as fluorescent lighting. For example, while LEDs have traditionally been used as indicator lighting and digital displays, LED technology has evolved to use this technology for area lighting. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are solid-state semiconductor devices that convert electrical energy into light. LEDs use inorganic semiconductor layers to convert electricity into light, while OLEDs use organic semiconductor layers to convert electricity into light. Generally, OLEDs are fabricated by depositing multiple layers of organic thin films between two conductors or electrodes. When an electric current is applied to the electrodes, th...
