Problems solved by technology

[0009] The disadvantage of force feedback is the power required to deliver the force felt by the user
This is especially a problem with wireless mice or other devices that rely on batteries, or devices that are powered by the limited power of the Universal Serial Bus (USB)

[0034] System Overview

[0035] figure 1 is a block diagram of an electronic system for haptic feedback according to an embodiment of the present invention. Shown is a mouse 10 having a roller sensor 12 for detecting movement of the roller or wheel. The sensor signals are provided to processing circuitry in ASIC 14 . ASIC 14 also receives signals from mouse sensor 16 and button sensor 18 . Mouse sensor 16 provides detector signals from two encoder rollers on a mouse ball, or optical signals on an optical mouse.

[0036] The ASIC 14 also controls two roller actuators 20 and 22 which, as described below, provide the mouse roller or ratchet function on the wheel. Actuators requiring power receive their power from USB 24 on line 25 . Therefore, there is a need to minimize the amount of power used by the actuator. Sensor signals received by ASIC 14 are translated into packet format and transmitted via USB 24 to host computer 26 for controlling display 28 . Host 26 may prov...

Abstract

The present invention provides a rotatable wheel of an input device for interfacing with a computer. The input device includes a permanent magnet and an electromagnet. A rotor made of a material that will magnetically interact with the permanent magnets and electromagnets is coupled to the rotatable wheel. The permanent magnets and electromagnets can be used to control a ratchet force applied to the rotatable wheel. In an alternative embodiment, a rotatable wheel with a flywheel engages a roller. A ratchet is intermittently engageable with the flywheel to provide a ratchet force. By disengaging the ratchet, the flywheel is allowed to rotate, providing momentum to allow easier scrolling in certain situations, such as scrolling through a long document.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a roller or wheel on an input device such as a mouse. In particular, the present invention relates to providing a magnetic ratchet or braking force to the user of the roller. Background technique [0002] In addition to the main input, rollers are commonly used on mice, which move the mouse on balls protruding from the bottom of the mouse housing. Alternatively an optical sensor could be used instead of the ball. Other input devices such as trackballs with a ball on top, joysticks, etc. will have a movable portion for providing input. In addition to this movable part, rollers can be added. The roller can be used for functions such as scrolling or zooming. The rollers are operated by the user's fingers, much like dialing a radio. [0003] There are many different designs for these rollers on a mouse or other device. Examples include Multipoint Technology Corporation Patent No. 5,298,919, Microsoft Patent No. 5,473,...
