[0042] Throughout the drawings, the same reference numerals will be used for corresponding or analogous elements.

[0043] The present invention relates to group-based data communications in which communication data originating from a user communication unit is transmitted to multiple user communication units simultaneously on a single dedicated channel or communication resource.

[0044] The teachings of the present invention discussed and disclosed herein can be applied to several data communication services and types in a cellular communication system, including but not limited to push-to-talk over cellular (PoC) data communication, video telephony and conferencing, and various Share apps. Accordingly, the present invention relates to data communication within a group of participating user communication units, where a single user communication unit wishes to simultaneously transmit data to all or at least several of the user units participating in the communication group. ...

Abstract

A sending subscriber unit (400) provides the communication server (100) with data intended for a plurality of receiving subscriber units (410-430). The server (100) identifies a group of at least two receiving subscriber units (410-412; 420-424) participating in a session and associated with the same cell (15, 25). Subscriber units (410-412; 420-424) of the group are identified based on session identifiers (144) and cell identifiers (146) stored in an associated database (140). Then, using the same dedicated channel specific to the cell (15, 25) in which the subscriber unit (410-412; 420-424) of the group exists, the traffic from the transmitting subscriber unit (400) is transmitted in a point-to-multipoint manner. Data is simultaneously transmitted to the receiving subscriber unit (410-412; 420-424). The invention is particularly applicable to push-to-talk over cellular (PoC) and other group-based data communication services.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to data communications, and more particularly to point-to-multipoint data communications in cellular communications systems. Background technique [0002] The trend in today's cellular communication systems is the emergence of new communication services offered to users. Services traditionally associated with computer networks are now also available in cellular communication systems, for example using the Internet Protocol (IP). Furthermore, several group-based communication services are being introduced into existing cellular communication systems in which a single user communicates with several other users simultaneously. A typical example of such a service is the so called push to talk service. [0003] Push to talk over Cellular (PoC) is a communication service that basically functions as a "walkie-talkie" service, but implemented in a cellular telecommunication system. PoC-enabled handsets or mobile units...
