Embodiment Construction

[0024] When referring to the drawings, like numerals represent like elements, and like numerals appearing in more than one drawing represent like elements. In addition, the following definitions apply throughout:

[0025] "Resilient"refers to the ability of a material, article, device or device element to increase or decrease in size relative to one or more actual dimensions. Elastic materials can be extensible, compressible or both. Elasticity refers to the property of a material, object, device or device element that is elastic.

[0026] "Sturdy" refers to materials that are poorly or inflexibly elastic.

[0027] "Unitary object" means an object or article that is made of a continuous or continuous material or of separate components that are connected to each other. A single object does not include physically separate, disconnected elements. A preferred single object is made of a single material. However, a single object may comprise multiple components interconnected b...

Abstract

The invention provides a fiber optical strain gage that impart physical strain to an optical fiber by varying the tension applied axially to the fiber, which causes a change in the optical property of the light transmitted through the fiber. According to a gage carrier for a fiber optic strain gage having an optical fiber comprising a support bar extending along a longitudinal axis of the carrier; a first and second mounting surface each positioned and rigidly attached at an end of the support bar for mounting the strain gage onto a surface of a test specimen; a first and second optical fiber fastening element, which are longitudinally spaced apart from each other for securing the optical fiber parallel to the longitudinal axis of the carrier; the first fastening element rigidly attached to the first mounting surface and the second fastening element rigidly attached to the second mounting surface, the support bar extending between the first and second fastening elements wherein at least a portion of the support bar is elastic with respect to expansion, compression or both along the longitudinal axis of the carrier.

Description

[0001] cross reference [0002] This application claims US Provisional Application 60 / 765,547, filed February 6, 2007. This application is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. technical field [0003] The present invention relates to a fiber optic based meter. Background technique [0004] In recent years, fiber optic based strain gauges have gained acceptance in the market as an alternative to conventional electrical gauges based on changes in, for example, resistance, inductance or capacitance. In many applications, such as building structure inspection, downhole oil and gas applications, and marine and aviation applications, fiber optic meters have advantages over traditional meters. Unlike other electrical meters, fiber optic based meters are insensitive to electromagnetic interference and suitable for use in electrically noisy environments. Fiber-based meters are also easily multiplexed, allowing more meters to operate over long distances on a single fib...
