Embodiment Construction

[0010] [09] Prior art methods of synthesizing lithiated metal phosphate materials generally rely on chemical reactions of precursor materials, typically at elevated temperatures. In accordance with the present invention, lithiated metal phosphate compounds are prepared by reacting precursor materials under reducing conditions, typically in which the metal component is reduced from a higher oxidation state to a lower oxidation state, although the present invention can also Used in conjunction with processes where metal components are not reduced. In any event, the inventors have found that the material thus produced has greatly improved performance characteristics as a cathode material for lithium batteries compared to prior art materials.

[0011] [10] After research, the present inventors have found that this synthetic method involving a reduction step produces a two-phase material. After electron microscopy and EDX (energy dispersive X-ray) analysis of the material, it was ...

Abstract

A composite material includes a first phase which comprises LixMy(PO4)z wherein M is at least one metal, y and z are independently 0, and x is less than or equal to 1. The material includes a second phase which has an electronic and / or lithium ion conductivity greater than that of the first phase. The material is prepared by heating a starting mixture which includes lithium, iron, a phosphate ion, and a catalyst in a reducing atmosphere. Also disclosed are electrodes which incorporate the material and batteries which utilize those electrodes as cathodes.

Description

[0001] related application [0002] [01] This application claims priority to US Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 60 / 624,212, filed November 2, 2004, entitled "Method of Making Composite Electrode Material." field of invention [0003] [02] In general, the present invention relates to methods of synthesizing materials. More specifically, the present invention relates to methods of synthesizing composite materials comprising a metal phosphate phase. Most particularly, the present invention relates to methods of synthesizing composite materials comprising a lithiated metal phosphate phase and a conductivity-enhancing second phase, and electrodes made from these materials. Background of the invention [0004] [03] Lithiated transition metal phosphates such as LiFePO 4 , including its various doped and modified forms, is finding growing utility as a cathode material for lithium batteries. These materials are disclosed in US Patent Nos. 6,730,281, 6,855,273, and 6,514,...
