Embodiment Construction

[0022] For the sake of clarity, the same reference numerals have been used in the different drawings to refer to the same elements, and further, as is common in representations of integrated circuits, the drawings are not to scale.

[0023] In order to avoid drying out of the fuel cell unit, the present invention allows the cell to retain the naturally occurring water. In fact, when H + Water is formed at the level of the upper catalyst layer 7 when protons recombine with oxygen and electrons from the cathode current collector. In order to avoid evaporation of these waters, the present invention places a hydrophilic polymer layer adjacent to the upper catalyst layer 7 . This hydrophilic polymer layer is able to maintain a moist environment in the cell, especially at the level of the electrolyte 6 .

[0024] FIG. 2 is a cross-sectional view of a fuel cell including all elements of the cell unit shown in FIG. 1 . According to one aspect of the invention, a hydrophilic polymer...

Abstract

A fuel battery cell covered with a hydrophilic polymer layer.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a fuel cell. Background technique [0002] Figure 1 shows an example of a fuel cell formed by microelectronics technology. The cell is formed on a silicon wafer 1 coated with a first thin insulating layer 2 and a second thicker insulating layer 3 . Openings are formed in part of the insulating layer 3 . In this opening a support 4 , a catalyst layer 5 , an electrolyte 6 and a second catalyst layer 7 are successively deposited. The electrodes 10 disposed on the first insulating layer 2 can be in contact with the lower surface of the battery cell, as well as with the support 4 . The opening 11 of the second insulating layer 3 can lead to the electrode 10 . The upper electrode 12 can contact the upper catalyst layer 7 . The electrodes 10 and 12 have openings and form channels 13 in the silicon wafer 1 opposite the openings in the metallized lower surface. The lower electrode 10 and the upper electrode 12 form an anode curren...
