Embodiment Construction

[0049] Figure 1a A typical light emitting device embodiment 100 of the present invention is described. The lighting device 100 has a pair of light emitting diodes (LEDs) 101, 103 that emit blue light and yellow light, respectively. The LEDs 101, 103 are placed close together such that the blue and yellow light mix together to produce a different color light, preferably but not limited to white light, after a mixing length from the LEDs. A diffuser 105 can be placed on the light path of light from the LEDs to reduce the mixing length.

[0050] An AC power source 111, connected to the LEDs 101, 103 through a pair of driving circuits 107, 109, respectively, drives the blue and yellow LEDs 101, 103 alternately so that each LED 101, 103 alternately emits light in the time domain. Due to the persistence of vision, when the frequency of the AC (Alternating Current) power signal is high enough, such as higher than 25 Hz, the discontinuity of blue light or yellow light cannot be dete...

Abstract

A light emitting device (100) includes a first light emitting diode (101) emitting a first light emission of at least a first wavelength, and a second light emitting diode (103) emitting a second light emission of at least a second wavelength. The second light emitting diode (103) is placed in close proximity to the first light emitting diode (101) such that after a mixing length from the first and second light emitting diodes, a combination of the first and second lights is perceived as one color in the human vision. In use, the first and second light emitting diodes are alternately driven by a power source (111) in the time domain.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to light emitting devices that use light emitting diodes to generate light of a desired color. Background of the invention [0002] With the development of high-efficiency LED devices for blue or ultraviolet (UV) light, it is possible to manufacture white LED devices, that is, a part of the original emission light emitted by the light-emitting structure of the LED device is converted into a longer wavelength by phosphor powder. Converting the primary emission to longer wavelengths is often referred to as down conversion of the primary emission. The unconverted portion of the original emitted light is combined with longer wavelength light to produce white light. LED devices that produce white light through phosphor conversion can be used for signaling and lighting purposes. [0003] Recent developments have focused on fluorescent materials that improve white light production. For example, U.S. Patent 5,998,925, entitled ...
