The method comprise steps of collecting the image of an poultry egg, filtering the collected image; detecting the marginal points of the poultry egg in the image by using R component as a variable function and utilizing the dichotomy in the RGB color space of the filtered image; calculating the centroid of the poultry egg by utilizing the obtained marginal points information; using the centroid as the basic point to search the longitudinal diameter and the maximum transverse diameter of the poultry egg. The technical scheme of the present invention has the characteristics that (1) the image does not need binarization; (2) marginal detecting adopts dichotomy and the detecting speed is high;(3) a simplified centroid calculating method is adopted and the efficiency is high; (4) the detecting accuracy is high.
