Embodiment Construction

[0035]Content distributed in a peer-to-peer network is usually in the form of files shared between clients in the peer-to-peer network, such as mp3 music files or mpeg movie files. A client is eg a PC, PDA, mobile phone, smart phone, peer-to-peer software, digital television, media player or set top box. In a peer-to-peer file sharing system, files are divided into segments. Clients in a peer-to-peer network communicate with a large number of other clients who want to download file segments. Another client can upload a complete file (ie all file segments) or a partial file (ie those file segments already downloaded in another client) to this client. Peer-to-peer networks are configured such that clients obtain segments from various other clients. This reduces the load on each client and spreads network traffic. figure 1 A simplified structure of a peer-to-peer network 6 is shown with one server system 1 connected to the network and four clients 2, 3, 4 and 5 in the network....

Abstract

The invention provides a server system, client, method and program element for distributing content in a peer-to-peer network. The server system spits a file into segments and makes copies of the segments for clients to download. Each segment is encrypted with a unique encryption key and marked. Identifiers of encrypted segments are transmitted to clients such that each client receives a unique set of identifiers enabling the client to download a unique set of encrypted segments from other clients and / or from the server system.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a server system for distributing content, a client for receiving distributed content, a method for distributing content, and a program element for distributing content. More specifically, the invention relates to distributing files in peer-to-peer networks. Background technique [0002] Peer-to-peer networks are implemented by having large numbers of computers communicate with each other over a network such as the Internet. Peer-to-peer networks are often used to share files. Initially, files provided for download are copied across multiple computers and divided into multiple pieces. The computer that is downloading the file retrieves different pieces from different computers. Thus, the computer that is downloading the file communicates with several computers at the same time. Segments of files that the computer has downloaded are made available by the computer for download by other computers in the peer-to-peer network. T...
