[0024] As mentioned above, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) chemical shifts are a useful measurement that can be used to distinguish one chemical compound from another. However, the applicability of the measurement method is limited by inhomogeneities in the magnetic field. Many magnets, especially those used in logging applications, include pre-machined, magnetized plates, and can have field uniformity no greater than a few parts per million (ppm), if so, these few ppm are due to due to design and limited manufacturing precision. Even if the field uniformity of a magnet could be improved during machining, it is unlikely that a magnet will retain such a uniform adjustment after it is installed in a tool and operated in an environment of varying temperatures.
